At Ursinus College, students have the opportunity to learn Arabic, Chinese-Mandarin, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. In the belief that the study of languages, literatures, and cultures other than one’s own increases global- and self-awareness, the Department of Modern Languages prepares students to become informed and engaged international citizens. Our students who major or minor in a language acquire linguistic and cultural competencies through advanced language skills, a deep understanding of diverse literary and ethnic traditions, and the social contexts from which they stem.

We encourage our students to engage with the international community both on and off campus. Many of our students study abroad, undertake internships with bilingual communities, join weekly language tables, and interact with students from other countries at Musser International House and with our faculty who come from diverse backgrounds.

We offer majors and minors in French, German, and Spanish. Japanese and Chinese are only offered as a minor. There are no minor or major programs for Arabic, but courses are offered and fulfill the language requirement.
