Voice and Veil: The Power and Impact of Arab Women Poets on Society
About my Watson Fellowship
United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Tunisia, Oman, Morocco & Spain
Meandering countless souks, mountain passes, and desert pathways, I traveled through Jordan, UAE, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco, and Spain researching “Voice and Veil: The Power and Impact of Arab Women Poets on Society.”
I made nearly inedible chocolate chip cookies in a Palestinian refugee camp, joined an all-night poetry reading in Sousse, danced at unexpected weddings in borrowed clothes, and mourned at the grave of Mahmoud Darwish. It was in these moments that I discovered my authentic self and my passion for hands-on social justice.
The masks, affectations, and pretensions dashed in the formative process that is The Watson Fellowship.
