What do you do?

I coordinate compliance with federal and state civil rights laws and regulations for the Maryland Transit Administration, serving as the Title VI / ADA Coordinator in the office of Equal Opportunity Compliance Programs. (Title VI being a reference to one of the sections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the one that involves public services). I draft policies and procedures, training employees, and investigating complaints of alleged noncompliance.

How do you see the connection between the time you spent as a Politics/IR major and what you’ve been able to do since?

My current work draws evenly from my backgrounds in urban planning and law. Ursinus’ Politics and International Relations professors fostered the analytical thinking and writing essential for a legal career as a compliance officer.

What advice do you have for students currently majoring in, or considering to major in IR?

Your college education is an investment in your future, where your time spent writing research papers yields dividends that will pay off throughout your life. Do not pass by opportunities to analyze the assigned texts and practice honing your writings skills, as such skills will prove essential in future careers. Also, embrace footnotes.
