OVERVIEW

Two years ago I researched how television portrayals of Black Women translated into the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes in the real world. I worked alongside faculty member Dr. Harris from the Sociology Department. My goal was to understand how these portrayals could further impact a Black woman’s self concept as well as how the world perceives her. I wish to expand and do future research on the psychological implications these portrayals could potentially have.  

WHAT WAS VALUABLE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

This experience was my first time doing a full independent research project. I learned how to compile and read data. I learned how to synthesize it efficiently and properly to a broader audience. 

THE COOLEST PART OF THE EXPERIENCE

Afterwards, later that year I was able to present my project at a conference recommended by my mentor. This was my first conference and I was eager to share my work. It was nice to have people ask questions and for my project to have made an impact with those who stopped by. 

WHO I MET THAT MADE A DIFFERENCE

Dr. Harris helped me out tremendously. Without her I wouldn’t nearly be able to make all the links, associations, and conclusions about my research without her continuously asking questions and pushing me to think passed the box.
