Dr. Gerald Edelman ’50 was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1972 for his discoveries concerning the chemical structure of antibodies. A physician and cell biologist, Dr. Edelman graduated magna cum laude from Ursinus and received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller Institute, where he became a professor. In 1992 he joined The Scripps Research Institute in California, where he most recently chaired the neurobiology department. Dr. Edelman also directed the Neurosciences Institute and was president of the Neurosciences Research Foundation up until his passing in Spring 2014. He has made significant research contributions in biophysics, protein chemistry, immunology, cell biology, and neurobiology, most notably in the area of how consciousness develops.
