Explore the History of the Ursinus College Literary Magazine

A digital archive of the Lantern Literary Magazines is available to browse, search and download in the Ursinus College Digital Commons.  Dating back to the first magazine published in May 1933, over 180 issues are available.  The magazine has changed in many ways over the past 85 years, but one will always find a wonderful blend of student fiction, nonfiction, poetry and art.  Some of the earliest issues also feature book reviews and nonfiction pieces related to campus history and the local community.  As explained in the first issue, the “Lantern” name was chosen “because it represents a distinctive feature of campus architecture, and because it symbolizes the light shed by creative work.”  Reading this creative work can provide a fascinating glimpse into the past of Ursinus College as well as the historic events which shaped previous generations of students here.  Physical copies of some past issues are also available to read on the main floor of Myrin Library and all issues can be viewed by appointment in the College Archives.
