Student Jobs in the Library

Student assistants participate in many different areas of library operations and are essential in the provision of quality services.

Job Descriptions

Circulation

Circulation duties include, but are not limited to, checking materials in/out, assisting patrons, shelving and shelfreading, retrieving holds and ILL’s, accepting payment for fines, checking patron’s records, adding new patron’s records, answering phones, and retrieving materials from the Reserve Room.

Digitization

Digitization assistants work with the Metadata Librarian to create content for our Digital Commons. Students will scan and/or photograph books, magazines, photos and other archival materials using a variety of tools and methods. Students use editing software to ensure image quality and record data according to project guidelines. Students may assist in uploading finished content and metadata into Digital Commons. Other tasks as assigned. Previous experience with digital scanning, photography, and image editing is preferred.

Interlibrary Loan

ILL assistants participate in the daily processing of interlibrary loan materials. Students process lending requests by retrieving items from shelves or database, checking out books, scanning and photocopying, and sending items through the interlibrary loan system or mail. Borrowing requests are processed by receiving incoming mail, notifying patrons and placing incoming items on the ILL shelf. Technology utilized: MS Word, MS Excel, scanner/photocopier, ILL software, Microform machine.
