Conversations About and Across Difference

Conversations About and Across Difference

Originating in 2016, this lunch series asks participants to contemplate one or more questions on topics that engage us in conversation about identity, inclusion, and belonging, to name a few. This program encourages active listening, providing opportunities to learn more about others, and more about oneself.

History and Purpose

In 2016, Dr. Mark Schneider, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, pioneered the concept of fostering Conversations About and Across Difference at Ursinus College. By creating a platform that bridges faculty, staff, and students, Dr. Schneider enabled a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives, nurturing a culture of understanding and inclusivity. This initiative provided a safe and celebrated space for individuals to engage in meaningful discussions, leading to heightened awareness and appreciation of each other’s humanity.

In 2017, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Heather Lobban-Viravong’s partnership with Dr. Schneider, further amplified the impact of this initiative. Together, they facilitated transformative dialogues that transcended boundaries, fostering empathy and connection within the Ursinus community. Their collaborative efforts enriched campus life and served as a model for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion while building community.

Lunches

Our Conversations About and Across Difference lunches are intentionally crafted to inspire faculty, staff, and students to develop a keen awareness and appreciation for various forms of diversity. These gatherings provide an opportunity for open dialogue and increased understanding of those who might be different from us. Our goal is to build community, creating a strong network of relationships that we can celebrate and call upon in critical moments.
